Here are six tips to keep you cool this summer:
1. Stay hydrated
Don’t wait until you are thirsty to drink, by the time you feel thirsty you’re already slightly dehydrated. Drinking enough water is important to regulate body temperature, keep joints lubricated, prevent infections, deliver nutrients to cells, and keep organs functioning properly. Being well-hydrated also improves sleep quality, cognition, and mood. Some fun ways to stay hydrated are by adding fruit to flavor your water or enjoying a sports drink with electrolytes.
2. Stick to the shade
Who doesn’t love being outside in the summertime? However, remember to escape the sun’s harmful UV rays by spending some time in the shade. Shade helps regulate body temperature and minimizes wrinkles. Finding time to go inside and enjoy the air conditioning especially between 10 am and 2 pm which is when the sun’s rays at their strongest. Make sure to grab your umbrella next time you head to the beach.
3. Protect yourself
It is extremely important to protect yourself from the harmful sun’s ultraviolet rays by using sunscreen, wearing a hat, and sunglasses. The sun’s UVA and UVB penetrate the skin causing wrinkles, sunburn and contributing to skin cancer. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends a water-resistant, broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher for any extended outdoor activity. While also applying sunscreen 30 minutes before sun exposure and reapplying every two hours or immediately after swimming.
4. Eat water-rich foods
There are many positives to eating water-rich foods they are easy to digest and increases water intake at the same time to keep you hydrated. Watermelon, cantaloupes, and cucumbers contain high amounts of water which makes it the perfect summer snack.
5. Pull out your light-colored clothing
The color white along with other lighter colors reflects the light while dark colors trap the heat. Also, wear loose-fitting clothes which allow for better airflow. You can only wear white between Memorial Day and Labor Day, wear it while you can!
