What Texas Physician Must Know

Congratulations! You’ve completed your application for licensure in Texas! But before you start practicing, it’s important to understand Texas license activation & renewal to ensure your license is truly active and compliant.

In Texas, earning your license isn’t the final step, you must also register it to make it active. Miss this deadline, and your ability to practice in the state could be put on hold.

The Texas Medical Board enforces strict requirements for activating and renewing a medical license, and too many physicians get tripped up by the details.

Whether you’re a physician getting licensed for the first time or making sure your renewal goes through, here’s what every Texas licensee needs to know about activation, renewal, and fingerprinting requirements.

First-Time License Activation

Once the Texas Medical Board issues your license, you must pay your first time registration fee within 90 days of your license issue date. Until this fee is paid, your license will not be considered active. Missing this deadline can delay your ability to practice, so it is important to complete this step.

License Renewal

To keep your license active, Texas physicians are required to renew their registration every two years. You may begin the renewal process 60-90 days prior to your license expiration date. These renewals are to be completed online through the TMB portal.

The Texas Medical Board does send out postcard reminders at least 60 days in advance of the expiration date, but it is advised to set your own calendar alert to stay ahead of deadlines.

Stay Ahead of Compliance

Like Texas, many states have their own unique rules and regulations when it comes to getting licensed. The process can be strict, and missing even a single step could put your ability to practice at risk.

If you’re planning to practice in multiple states, the complexity only grows. That’s why it’s essential to stay ahead by double-checking requirements with your Mocingbird representative, your Mocingbird dashboard, or directly with the state medical board to ensure you’re always working with the most accurate, up-to-date information.
