License Renewal Cycle Time for West Virginia (MDs)
- West Virginia state licenses for MDs must be renewed every 2 years.
- Example: If you last renewed your license on June 30th, 2020, you must renew again on June 30th, 2022.
- The license renewal cycle and requirements are NOT the same for MDs and DOs.
Board Rule Checklist: State of West Virginia (MDs)
- There are 4 ways to renew your state license:
- Classic CME
- Complete 50 hours of AMA PRA Category 1 CME
- Due: Every 2 years at license renewal
- Of the 50 hours, complete 30 hours of AMA PRA Category 1 CME in area(s) of specialty
- Due: Every 2 years at license renewal
- Complete 50 hours of AMA PRA Category 1 CME
- ABMS Certification/Recertification Exam
- Sit for and pass a certification or recertification examination of an ABMS member board and receive certification or recertification during the relevant reporting period
- Due: Every 2 years at license renewal
- Sit for and pass a certification or recertification examination of an ABMS member board and receive certification or recertification during the relevant reporting period
- Active Participation in MOC
- Successfully participate in maintenance of certification (MOC) through an ABMS member board during the relevant reporting period
- Due: Every 2 years at license renewal
- Successfully participate in maintenance of certification (MOC) through an ABMS member board during the relevant reporting period
- One Full Year of ACGME Approved Training
- Successfully complete one full year of ACGME approved postgraduate training during the reporting period
- Due: Every 2 years at license renewal
- Successfully complete one full year of ACGME approved postgraduate training during the reporting period
Special Rule for West Virginia
- Drug Diversion Training and Best Practice Prescribing of Controlled Substances Training CME: Physicians who have prescribed, administered, or dispensed any controlled substance must complete 3-hours of Board-approved AMA PRA Category 1 CME in drug diversion training and best practice prescribing of controlled substances training
- Due: Every 2 years at license renewal
- Note: A physician who has not prescribed any controlled substances pursuant to a West Virginia license during the reporting period may seek a waiver of this requirement by attesting on the renewal application that he or she has not prescribed, administered or dispensed any controlled substances pursuant to a West Virginia license.
- Please check your Mocingbird account for a list of CME courses to satisfy this requirement.
- Precepting hours: You may earn 1 credit for every hour of precepting or teaching medical students, up to a maximum of 20 hours per renewal cycle. These credits will count towards the 50 hours of AMA PRA Category 1 CME under “Classic CME” option for renewal.
